Coming soon

Learn a language by reading books you actually want to read.

Not a textbook. Not a flashcard app you'll delete in a week. StoryFluent takes a story you're already hooked on and gradually swaps in words from the language you're learning, so new vocabulary sticks because it's attached to something you actually care about.

Hold the page to learn any word

See a translated word mid-sentence? Hold the page for an instant definition, right there. No need to leave your spot.

Listen along

Have the book read aloud, with every swapped word spoken in your target language, in sync with the page.

Read the news, too

Headlines from around the world in your own language, with the same gentle word swaps. Fresh every day.

Games and handwriting

Word games with levels to climb, and a chalkboard that teaches you to write every script, from Hangul to kanji to Arabic.

Streaks, levels & badges

Track your reading streak, level up as you go, and unlock badges the further you read.

Why StoryFluent

Most language apps ask you to stop living your life and study. StoryFluent fits into something you already do.

Your books, your lessons

Import any book you own or pick one of more than 1,200 classics. The story you'd read anyway becomes the course.

Private, offline, no subscription

Everything runs on your phone. No account to create, nothing uploaded, and the paid tier is a one-time purchase rather than a monthly bill.

Questions, answered

Bub gets asked these a lot.

Can you really learn a language just by reading?

Reading is one of the best ways to build vocabulary, and StoryFluent makes it work from day one. It swaps in only a few words per page at first, so the story stays readable, and increases the mix as you progress. Review sessions and games then make sure the words stick.

Do I need to already know some of the language?

No. You read in your own language, and StoryFluent adds target-language words gradually, starting with the most common ones. Complete beginners can start with their first book.

Which languages can I learn?

Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Japanese, Mandarin Chinese, Korean, Russian, Hindi and Arabic, plus English if it isn't your native language. You can read in any of the 12 and learn any of the others.

Can I use my own books?

Yes. Import any EPUB, PDF or plain-text file you own. It's processed on your phone and never uploaded.

Is StoryFluent free?

The app is free to download, and your first book is included. Classics in the Store are inexpensive one-time purchases, and StoryFluent Pro is a single one-time payment, not a subscription.

Does it work offline?

Yes. Your books, progress and reviews all live on your device, so you can read on a plane or the subway. Only the news reader and the Store need a connection.

When does it launch?
