How StoryFluent works

What happens between opening a book and reading it in a language you didn't know.

Built around your reading

Every feature starts from the book in your hands, not a separate curriculum.

12 languages, any pair

Read in any supported language and learn any other, in whichever direction you need.

Yours, on your device

Your books and your progress live on your phone. An account is optional, and the books you import never leave your device.

Gradual translation

Watch your book become a new language

Import any book you already own, or pick one up from the Store, and watch StoryFluent quietly swap in your target language as you read. No jarring switch, just a steady shift that grows the deeper you get into the story.

  • Word swaps happen right on the page as you read, not in a separate study mode
  • Read in any of 12 languages and learn any other, from Spanish to Arabic
  • Works with any book you import, or a title from our Store
Chapter 3

The old man walked down the 路 toward the 车站, his bag heavy with books.

StoryFluent turns up the immersion as you get deeper into a book, and you're always in control of how far it goes. Point it toward the words and topics that matter most to you.

  • Immersion builds automatically the further you read into a book
  • Dial the overall intensity up or down at any time
  • Focus on a theme, or the kinds of words you want to prioritize

Instant word lookup

Tap any word. Any language. No signal needed.

Double-tap a word and its dictionary entry opens right on the page, without losing your spot. Not only the words StoryFluent swapped in: any word in the book. It covers all 12 languages, and once your language pack has downloaded it works with no connection at all.

  • Every meaning, each with its part of speech in your own language
  • Hear it spoken, see a noun's gender, and read the full table of forms a verb takes
  • In Japanese and Chinese, tapping a single character finds the whole word around it

The rain had not stopped since morning, and the streets below glimmered like rivers of glass. She pulled her coat tighter and hurried past the shuttered shops, her footsteps echoing in the empty square. Somewhere ahead, a bell began to ring. She quickened her pace, counting the doorways as she passed, until a familiar window came into view, glowing warm against the gray evening. Whatever waited on the other side of that door, it could not be worse than the cold. The old door groaned as she pushed it open, and for a moment the warmth of the room wrapped around her like a blanket. A fire crackled in the hearth, and the smell of coffee and old paper filled the air. He looked up from his book the moment she stepped inside, as though he had known exactly when she would arrive. Neither of them spoke. There was no need to, not yet. She simply crossed the room, sat down across from him, and let the silence settle comfortably between them, the rain still tapping softly against the window glass.

Listen along

Hear the book, in two languages at once

Tap play and StoryFluent reads the book aloud, narrating in your language and speaking every swapped word in the one you're learning, exactly as it appears on the page. The page keeps pace with the audio, so you can read, listen, or both.

  • The page turns itself as the narration moves on, and turning it yourself takes back control
  • Swapped words are pronounced in your target language, right where they appear
  • Works with the books you import as well as the ones you buy

Word games

Play your way through the words you're learning

Seven games draw on the words you've actually met in your books. Each one has ten levels that get sharper as you climb, so a few minutes on the bus turns into real practice.

  • Seven games, each with ten levels to climb
  • Built from the words in your own reading, not a generic list

Handwriting practice

Learn to write every script, one stroke at a time

Some languages are as much about shape as sound. The chalkboard teaches you to write, scoring every stroke as you draw it and holding you to the right order where the script has one. It all happens on your phone, so a stroke drawn backwards fails even when the finished shape looks right.

  • Eight scripts, from Hangul and kanji to Cyrillic, Devanagari and Arabic, plus the Latin alphabet for anyone learning English
  • Strokes are scored on position, direction and placement, not just the final shape
  • Practice opens with the characters you know least well, and a reference grid shows where you stand
